Our skin is the body’s largest organ, and it can be overwhelming to figure out the proper skincare routine for your skin.
Men’s skincare has come a long way from a bar of soap or the multi-use products of the past. Men’s skin differs slightly from women’s in that it is a bit thicker and sometimes more oily. It’s okay for a man to use a significant other’s products, but I usually hear from men that they want a simplified routine that gives them results. Studies show that men who have products of their own use them more regularly, and some common feedback I get is that they want something lightweight and fragrance-free. Some things to consider first before figuring out a routine are skin type.
What skin type do you have?
Sensitive skin is sometimes red and easily irritated by products, temperatures, fragrances, and stress. It is possible to have other skin types and still have sensitive skin.
Normal skin usually has the appearance of smaller pores and looks balanced and healthy.
Oily skin tends to be shiny, primarily through the t-zone area and is prone to enlarged pores.
Acne skin can have clogged pores, blackheads, inflammation, papules, pustules, and cysts.
Combination skin has an area that is normal, dry, and oily and can change depending on the temperature. It’s often oily in the t-zone and dehydrated on the cheeks.
Dry skin can feel tight and flaky and is more prone to feeling itchy and rough.
A basic routine includes:
Cleanser to use morning and night, removing dirt and impurities from the skin and preventing breakouts and premature aging.
A physical exfoliator removes dead skin cells on the surface, prepares the skin for a closer shave, and prevents ingrown hairs and clogged pores.
A moisturizer is essential in your skincare routine and is best to apply after cleansing every morning and night. A lightweight, hydrating moisturizer that sinks in quickly without a residue is usually a good choice. Everyone, regardless of skin type, should use a moisturizer. Apply while it’s still damp to help seal in moisture. Apply a moisturizer twice daily to your face and neck for hydration.
Wearing an SPF all year round prevents aging and wrinkles and helps to prevent skin cancers from forming. Wearing sunscreen daily reduces the risk of skin cancer.

Some final tips on skin health
1) When spending time outside, make sure to not only wear sunscreen on your face and body but don’t neglect the top of your head.
2) After exercising, cleanse your skin and reapply moisturizer, or if going back out, reapply sunscreen.
3) Maintain a healthy diet, including fruits and vegetables. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.
4) Check your skin regularly and self-examine each month for new moles.
